SPF fights return-path address forgery and makes it easier to identify spoofs.
Domain owners identify sending mail servers in DNS. SMTP receivers verify the envelope sender address against this information, and can distinguish authentic messages from forgeries before any message data is transmitted.
A significant majority of spam is forged. SPF allows mail servers to easily distinguish forgeries from legitimate mail. Importantly, SPF works before the message body is transmitted, saving the bandwidth cost of downloading the message and the CPU cost of filtering it.
In general, customers should report spam by forwarding a copy of the message including full header and body to abuse@usa.net.
